Landscaping and Garden Design in Essex and South East England

New Lawns
Lawns have been the centrepiece for the English garden for generations. Aside from the formal look and feel many have come to 'expect' from a lawn, they actually play an integral and important part in the design of numerous gardens. Lawns are a great way of adding contrast to a garden, not only in terms of colour and variety, but also in height and space. They also happen to give you a safe, soft playing area for children.
Clearwater can provide you with a full Lawn Laying Service beginning with levelling your garden, through providing topsoil and soil nourishment for your lawn to thrive, to the actual laying of your new lawn using the highest-grade turf. You can be sure that the results will be exactly what you are looking for.

Garden Fencing, Trellising & Walling
We can install all types of fencing, from basic panel fencing to more decorative fencing and trellising. Almost every homeowner would like attractive garden fencing of one sort or another around their property. This may be for reasons of privacy, or to prevent children and pets roaming too freely, or simply to act as a boundary marker. Garden fencing and trellising can be used for many different reasons, some of which are listed below:

  • To provide privacy
  • To divide up your garden
  • To add height to your garden
  • For support of climbing plants
  • To shelter plants from wind and the elements
  • To be purely decorative

Whatever the reason for your needs, we have access to a wide variety of fencing materials and numerous accessories, making the final design as practical and aesthetically pleasing as possible.

Water Features, Ponds and Lakes
Water features can enhance almost any garden. Many people enjoy the additional qualities and ambience that water brings to a garden, and it is worth making a little extra effort to get it just right. Simple designs can be very effective, however for our more ambitious customers who require split-level water features with waterfalls etc. we are more than happy to provide design advice and information on pumps, filters, pond plants and aquatic life.

If you are wanting to add a pond:
To decide on the size and shape you require, a useful tip is to mark out the shape with a hose or string until you achieve the dimensions you like.
A beautiful water garden and a healthy fishpond should have clear clean water. A biological filter will help control the problem of green water and improve the water quality by removing harmful nitrite, ammonia and algae from your pond. Additionally, certain water plants can also assist in the oxygenation of the water. An ultra violet steriliser or clarifier used in tandem with a bio filter will give you guaranteed clear water in most cases within two weeks.
You may not have a hose or piece of string long enough if it is a lake you require. The best thing to do in this case is contact us and we will come and talk to you about your project.

Pergolas, Arbours & Garden Structures
The term pergola originally meant a covered walkway formed by plants growing up trellis. Today there are so many popular types of structure you can have in the garden, the term 'garden furniture' is often used to cover them all.
Choosing a pergola or arbour

  • Pergolas and other garden structures are traditionally made of rustic poles, but sawn timber is a popular alternative - especially when the pergola is combined with timber decking, or when a building forms one of the supports.
  • Sawn timber may be used in combination with brick columns or with painted scaffold poles serving as uprights
  • Hardwoods such as oak are often used for sawn timber pergolas, but softwoods are perfectly adequate as long as they are treated to be weatherproof
  • Pressure treated timber structures are often a wise choice as they are much more weatherproof
Pergola and arbour design and construction

We can supply you with pergolas to standard sizes and shapes. However if you are looking for something a little more imaginative and unique, we can construct your designs.

Land & Garden Clearance
Land and garden clearance covers tasks such as breaking up and removing patios, sheds, concrete paths and masonry walls and other garden structures. It also includes clearing bushes, ground foliage and excavating trees, and levelling and flattening a site where a patio, lawn or other construction is to be laid.
The preparation of a garden before reconstruction usually involves the removal of waste and unwanted plants and structures. All garden clearance waste is either taken directly to the tip for disposal, or we will hire a skip if required. If necessary, skip permits and hire can be organised through Clearwater.
Direct access to the garden is ideal, but as you would expect, if clearance involves carrying waste through a customer’s house or business property, it is company policy to clean up thoroughly when the work is complete, leaving areas tidy and reducing inconvenience to the customer to a minimum.

Garden Design
We offer a completely personalised garden design service. Whether you have a brand new garden and don't know where to start, or you want to improve an established garden, we can produce a garden design for it, taking your lifestyle, needs and gardening capabilities into consideration.

To get the process started, we would start with a visit to your garden to discuss your ideas and requirements, and take basic measurements of the dimensions of your garden. We will discuss whether you want the full garden redesigned, or just certain areas of it. We would also advise you on the types of materials you could use to keep any design within your budget.

It is very important to consider all the uses to which the garden will be put before any work starts because, as you might imagine, mistakes are often difficult and expensive to rectify afterwards! Even if you intend to construct or plant your garden in stages, you should start with an overall garden plan to avoid mistakes. We will, if required take you through ‘planning your garden’ or you could do this beforehand simply by following the simple directions provided or by reading one or more of the books listed.
